Trainer Biographies

Jessa Wilkening - I've lived in Montana for the last 15 years and recently graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Sociology. I've harbored a love of horses from the very first time I saw one grazing in a field as a child. My horse career has included trail riding, hunter/jumper competitions, and a bit of cross country and dressage and now I've been given the opportunity to play with horses and get paid for it under the guise of work. Every day at Mountain Magic Ranch I learn more as the horses I teach in turn teach me to understand them better. Since coming to Mountain Magic Ranch I've realized just how much I didn't know before and how much I have yet to learn from this wonderful Rocky Mountain Horse breed and from my great co-workers as well.

Joe Turner ? Joe recently relocated to Three Forks, MT with his wife, Leah, and 9 month old daughter, Briahna, from the central California region, where he owned and operated a Horsemanship Company. Joe?s safety and partnership techniques have helped horses and their owners alike achieve a partnership that makes for a truly unique relationship between horse and rider, safe and fun with a natural partnership as the main focus. Getting experience from not only educating horses and their riders to setting up an Equestrian Center and curriculum for Yosemite High School as well as working in the Therapeutic Riding field, has Joe continually finding new ways to understand and communicate with the horse. Joe?s passions also reside in his spending time with his family and his love for the outdoors including but not limited to Telemark Skiing, White Water Kayaking and Hunting.

Mountain Magic Ranch Announces New Blog

Mountain Magic Ranch is proud to announce that we are now fully interactive with a new Blog you can access at www.gaitedmtnhorses.blogspot.com. Now everyone can have constant communication with us here at the Ranch. This blog is for people who already own a Rocky Mountain Horse from MMR. We're also making our blog available to those who need help or private sessions with trainers and where we can offer video instruction and any other help required for the safe and fun relationship of Rockys and their owners. The public is also invited to post comments, ask questions or to just rave about their own Rocky experiences! Please feel free to contact us at anytime.

Trainers Corner

Darla: Most horse related accidents happen when people are mounting or dismounting. Make sure your horse is prepared and willing for you to mount or dismount. You should be able to see the eye of your horse from the side you will mount or dismount on. If you cannot see the eye use your rein or rope halter to tilt the horses head toward you. Make sure the horse is willing to stand still and let you mount or dismount.

Joe: My tip is about horse psychology. How do you know when your horse is learning, understands, is calm and paying attention? Horses have many different ways to "talk" or communicate with you and every horse is different. With that said, every horse (no matter what breed) will exhibit five simple signs to give us the answers. These five signs of relaxation or understanding are as follows: 1) Lowered head, 2) Licking lips, 3) Cocked leg, 4) Deep breath or exhale and 5) Soft half closed eyes. Once we understand what they are telling us then we can insure a safe and confident experience.

Brood Mares to be Retrained for Trail Riding

We've begun bringing in some of our brood mares to retrain as trail horses. These mares have had some beautiful foals and we are keeping some of their daughters to replace them in our brood mare herd. That allows us to offer some of the best mares in all colors for sale after finishing our natural training program. We also offer a free breeding to one of our stallions as a bonus if you choose one of our brood mares. Ask us about it!
